What to wear

Style Guide

The hardest part of booking an engagement session is answering: what do I wear? Here are a few guidelines I’ve put together so you guys can be sure to look your best and while feeling the most comfortable. Heads up, this advice is coming to you from a girl who thinks it is acceptable to wear socks with sandals and oversized hoodies in public. So, chances are, you're already ahead of me in the fashion category!

Does this outfit make sense?

Think about the conditions and locations we are going to be shooting in. If we are shooting on a sandy beach, it would look weird if you’re wearing shoes and heels are an even worse idea! If it’s cold outside, cozy up in some wool sweaters and oversized scarves. If it is super hot outside, wear a tank top or loose flowing shirt so you won't end up with sweaty armpits in the photos. Think about the environment and wear what makes sense!

Colours

Being a die hard fan of earth tones and neutrals, I typically recommend your outfits reflect that style. That doesn't mean "blacks and whites", get fun with it by incorporating mustard yellows, forest green, navy blue and burnt orange!

Think about the environment you will be in. If you're surrounded by orange leaves in the midst of fall, let the scenery be the colour in your photo and have your outfit compliment the colours by wearing more beige and neutrals.

MOVEMENT

We tend to do a lot of walking and I like to get you guys active to catch those candid moments. Make sure that the materials you wear will keep you comfortable during the shoot not only for temperatures but also for being able to move around in. Wearing more free flowing clothes like maxi dresses can make for some gorgeous captures!

LAYERS

If thinking about multiple outfit choices gives you too much anxiety or is way too heavy to carry with you on our adventure, layers will become our best friend! Don't be afraid to dress up your outfit with a jean jacket, then strip it off or swap it out for a cardigan. Layers can add a whole new feeling to your outfit and is easier to pair together than multiple outfit choices.

PATTERNS

Avoid big and crazy patterns. The smaller or more subtle, the better! If the pattern is too loud, it will distract from your faces and the environment. Flannels are always a yes and perfect to be paired with solid layers. Remember, if one person is already wearing a pattern, odds are adding another item of clothes with a pattern will become too distracting.

Well, that's pretty much all! The most important thing to remember is that options are your friend and so I am. Feel free to bring a few selections and we can go through them together or send me some photos and I can help you shop through your closet and pair outfits together!
